- Ask readers for company and role at signup, then make it easy to finish their profile.
- Fill the gaps with enrichment, but never overwrite what a reader told you.
- Turn the data into a media kit sponsors can trust.
- Respect privacy: aggregate for sponsors, never share individuals.
Why audience data wins sponsorships
A sponsor selling software to logistics directors wants to know how many logistics directors read you. "48,000 subscribers" does not answer that. "A third of readers are director level or above, mostly in logistics and retail" does.
Illustrative example. Figures are fictional.
1. Ask at the right moment
Keep the signup form to one field. Right after signup, ask for company, role and industry on a short profile page. People who just subscribed are the most willing to tell you more.
2. Make finishing the profile easy later
Send a one-click link to complete a profile in a welcome email, and protect it with a signed link so readers do not need to log in.
3. Enrich carefully
Enrichment services can fill in company size, industry and role from a work email. Use them to fill gaps, keep a record of where each value came from, and never overwrite something a reader entered themselves. Self-reported data is the most trustworthy you have.
4. Turn it into sponsor-ready numbers
Summarize by role, seniority, industry and company size, and refresh it regularly. Put it in your media kit and in renewal conversations.
What most guides miss
Lessons from systems we have built and run, not the usual checklist.
Personal emails hide your best readers
Many senior readers subscribe with a personal address, which enrichment cannot match to a company. The profile step after signup is the only reliable way to learn who they are.
Store the source of every field
Knowing whether a job title came from the reader or from enrichment tells you how much to trust it, and lets you refresh enriched data without touching what readers gave you.
Engaged readers matter more than total readers
Sponsors care about who actually reads. Combine audience data with filtered engagement, so your media kit shows the roles of active readers, not just everyone on the list.
Privacy is part of the pitch
Share only aggregated numbers with sponsors and say so in your privacy policy. It protects readers and makes your data more credible, not less.
How we do it
We build signup and profile capture, enrichment that respects self-reported data, CRM sync and audience reporting as part of our growth systems, then feed it into monetization.
